District Data Labs offers a variety of workshops and courses to help you expand your data science skills.

Here are some of the upcoming courses:

Data Mining & Machine Learning with R

Oct 31, 2015, 9am - 5pm

Arlington, VA, USA.

R is a powerful language for statistical computing. A prolific user community backs R with with an extensive library of packages. If you can think of it, somebody has already written a library for it. R also has a superb IDE, R Studio, facilitating reproducible research.

This course is for people with some R programming experience. It gives an overview of statistical modeling and machine learning in R. We will focus on a small subset of algorithms. Students will learn where to find more machine learning libraries in R.

Building a Django Data Product

Nov 2, 6:30 - 8:30 pm ET

online

Django, written in Python, is one of the best web frameworks that is widely used for major web applications. The framework is well documented and easy to use, and allows data scientists to quickly put together web user interfaces to their analytical backends. From front-end visualizations in D3 powered by a RESTful API to simple web applications that allow users to explore data - the ability to create applications is a necessary tool for every data team.

In this tutorial we will show you how to create a Django project that interacts with a classifier and accepts feedback from the user, building a supervised training set to improve the model in the backend. We will go over Django project setup and settings, interacting with a PostgreSQL database using the Django ORM, creating views and dispatching to them with URL routers, and will create a simple UI using Django templates.

Analyzing Social Media Data with R

Nov 7, 2015, 9am-5pm

Arlington, VA, USA.

This beginner-to-intermediate level course will introduce you to various topics in social media analysis. Attendees will begin by learning social-scientific groundwork for understanding measurement and inference, and then demonstrate, through concrete examples using R, how to explore, measure, visualize, and communicate various aspects of social media. The course will be taught using parts of the book, Social Media Mining with R, but will include important additions such as topic modeling and social network analysis.

Natural Language Processing with R

Nov 21, 9am - 5 pm

Arlington, VA, USA.

R is a powerful language for statistical computing. A prolific user community backs R with an extensive library of packages. If you can think of it, somebody has already written a library for it. R also has a superb IDE, R Studio, facilitating reproducible research.

This course is for people with some R programming experience. Students may or may not have any NLP experience. We will introduce base R's text manipulation capabilities, use some frameworks for NLP in R, and call some commonly-used NLP algorithms. The course culminates in a full NLP project performed in R.
